Scholarship applications will open on February 1, 2024.

The UPMC Pinnacle Foundation offers a variety of educational funding opportunities, which are available to current employees and local students pursuing degrees in nursing. Multiple awards may be given based on the number of applicants and funding available.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by email by June 15, 2024. Deadline to apply is April 30, 2024. If you experience any issues or have any questions during your application process, please email Jodi Mattern at matternjm@upmc.edu.

Please note that the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary has a different application.

Nursing Scholarships

Open to the Public

The Lester L. and Anna S. Buchart Scholarship

Awarded to any individual pursuing a degree in post-secondary education in the field of nursing at an accredited college or university.

Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship

Awarded to any individual pursuing a degree in post-secondary education in the field of nursing including advanced degrees (Nurse Practitioner); including high-school seniors accepted into an accredited nursing program.

Dr. Donald Haselhuhn Scholarship

Awarded to any individual pursing an advanced nursing degree at an accredited college or university.


Employee Only

Dr. Rena Lawrence Nursing Scholarship

Awarded each year to an employee pursuing a baccalaureate degree in Nursing at an accredited college or university.

Dr. Francis J. Duggan Nursing Scholarship

Awarded each year to any employee pursuing post-secondary education in nursing at an accredited college or university, with preference given to individuals living in Susquehanna Township, Lower Paxton Township, Swatara Township, and the City of Harrisburg. Multiple awards may be given based on candidates and funds available.

Benjamin Olewine Nursing Scholarship

Awarded each year to a Nurse pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited college or university in Nursing, with preference given to Nurses employed at UPMC Community Osteopathic working on the third and fourth floors. Multiple awards may be given based on candidates and funds available.

Jill Staub Memorial Nursing Scholarship

Awarded each year to a Nurse pursuing post-secondary education at an accredited college or university in Nursing employed at UPMC Harrisburg.

RHI Magnesita Nursing Scholarship

Awarded to employees currently working at any UPMC location in York County. Four (4) scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each will be given to employees pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.

Bathon Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover in Critical Care, Cardiac Diagnostics, Cardiac Rehab, Emergency Department, or Advanced Life Support and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.

Bonita C. Hart Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover working in Surgical Services and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.

Samuel A. Kirkpatrick, MD Scholarship

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover in OB/GYN or pediatrics and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.

Stephen M. Lawrence Scholarship Fund

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover in the Emergency Department and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.

Robert Shipman Memorial Scholarship Fund

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover the Radiology Department and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university..

Wendall Lehman Scholarship

Awarded to employees currently working at UPMC Hanover in the cardiovascular department and pursuing a post-secondary nursing program at an accredited college or university.


Nursing Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applicants who are current UPMC in Central Pa. employees are expected to remain employed within the system for the duration of the academic year for which the scholarship is granted. Recipients leaving the employment of UPMC Central PA prior to the end of the school year will be expected to repay the amount of the scholarship granted with no interest penalty.
  2. Minimum of 3.0 GPA in the major must be maintained.
  3. A current employee on Corrective Action during the review phase will not be considered for a scholarship.
  4. Awards will be allocated directly to the school where the student is enrolled for the following semester.

Application Timeline & Process

  1. Deadline to apply is April 30, 2024
  2. To apply, fill out and submit the online application form. If you have any questions, please contact the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation at 717-231-8080.
  3. Applicants must provide: • The most recent college or high school transcript. This may be from a different school than indicated on the application. • A personalized recommendation letter. This letter must be a new letter and not one from a previous year or for another scholarship application. • A brief personal statement about why the applicant is pursuing their degree, their career aspirations, and how this degree impacts their career at UPMC in Central Pa. No more than one page.
  4. Scholarship recipients will be notified by email around June 15, 2024.
  5. Only fully completed applications will be considered.
  6. Those applicants not receiving a scholarship will also be notified by email regarding their status.
  7. Upon award, recipients must provide a copy of their current tuition bill to the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation as outlined in the notification email.
  8. The scholarship will be in the form of tuition paid directly by the UPMC Pinnacle Foundation to an accredited college or university.

Healthcare Professionals' Scholarship

Healthcare Professional Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

  1. This scholarship is only open to UPMC in Central Pa. employees. This is designed for those in a non-nursing curriculum. Applicants are expected to remain employed within the system for the duration of the academic year for which the scholarship is granted. Recipients leaving the employment of UPMC Central PA prior to the end of the school year will be expected to repay the amount of the scholarship granted with no interest penalty.
  2. Minimum of 3.0 GPA in the major must be maintained.
  3. A current employee on Corrective Action during the review phase will not be considered for a scholarship.
  4. Awards will be allocated directly to the school where the student is enrolled for the following semester.

The Pinnacle Health Auxiliary

Ernest R. McDowell Health Career Scholarship

Awarded to any individual pursuing a career in health care and living in the Greater Harrisburg area. Sponsored by the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary.



Hanover Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships

The Cindi Troxell Memorial Award, sponsored by the Hanover Hospital.

The Cindi Troxell Memorial Award, sponsored by the Hanover Hospital Auxiliary, honors the memory of Cindi Troxell, former Board Member, who dedicated her life to education. The award provides up to $500 to UPMC Hanover Hospital employees pursuing further education in healthcare-related fields. It is to be used for books, lab fees, uniforms, school fees, or other associated costs. The amount awarded is dependent upon information provided on the application, supporting documents, and the student’s financial needs. Applications open March 1, 2023. SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

· Applicants are expected to remain employed within the system for the duration of the academic year for which the award is granted. Recipients who leave before that year are expected to repay the amount of the award granted with no interest penalty.

· A minimum of 3.0 GPA in the major must be maintained.

· An employee on Corrective Action during the review phase will not be considered for a Cindi Troxell Memorial Award.

The application will only be considered if all the following documents are received by April 30, 2023.

· Acceptance letter or most recent transcript from your educational institution, attached to the online application

· Letter of recommendation from current UPMC Hanover supervisor, attached to the online application

· Personal statement of 500 words or less, attached to the online application
