Richard Carson and Family Honors Transplant Team at Pittsburgh UPMC
“It's about making memories. That's what's most important.”
For the Carson family, Father's Day carries a deeper meaning.
Richard Carson's life was unexpectedly saved after a routine hernia surgery in 2019 revealed unusual spots on his liver. Years of monitoring eventually led to a liver cancer diagnosis in October 2024. Because the cancer could spread quickly, Richard underwent an urgent evaluation for a liver transplant at UPMC.
His son, Daniel, volunteered to be a living donor but was not a compatible match. Richard's daughter, Megan, was approved as a donor after extensive testing and donated part of her liver during a 12-hour transplant surgery in January 2025. Today, Richard is thriving and grateful for the extra time he has been given to spend with his family.
"It's about making memories," Richard said. "That's what's most important."

Bonnie Franklin Honors Dr. Mudge and Dr. Leah Cream at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in York
“We live two miles from there. But it wasn't just the proximity. It was the people. Every single one of them.”
Bonnie's care at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in York was exceptional by every measure. Surgeon Dr. Mudge performed her double mastectomy with skill and compassion, and oncologist Dr. Leah Cream guided her through treatment. From the front desk to the infusion center, the staff at UPMC Memorial became, in Robert's words, people they "absolutely fell in love with."
"We live two miles from there. But it wasn't just the proximity. It was the people. Every single one of them."
Chad Whitaker Honors The Care Team at UPMC West Shore and UPMC Harrisburg
“Despite facing personal loss, he chose to see his second chance at life as an opportunity to give back and volunteer for the same hospital that saved his life.”
For Chad Whitaker, a vacation turned into a life-altering experience when he discovered he was in heart failure at just 41 years old.
Thanks to the care he received at UPMC West Shore and UPMC Harrisburg, Chad not only survived but found a new purpose. Despite facing personal loss, he chose to see his second chance at life as an opportunity to give back and volunteer for the same hospital that saved his life.
Angela Miller Honors Holly Bressler, RN, Giovanna Sylvester, RN, Thalia Johnson, RN, Elaine Johnson, Dr. Greg Kohler at UPMC West Shore
“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You are simply outstanding, and we will always be grateful that you stood beside us on this most difficult journey. You will forever be part of our family.”
My father came to the floor on palliative care for congestive heart failure. Holly provided outstanding care and advocated for my father during his last days. She was very detailed and took great strides to make our transition to palliative care comfortable. Not only did she provide comfort to my dad in his last days, but she also extended great care to my mother and I. You could tell her heart is in nursing and her priority is the patient. She exemplifies the true meaning of nursing and is a valued member of your team. We are very grateful for her heart, her caregiving and her gentleness in walking us through this difficult journey. You have an amazing team on this floor. I would be remiss if I did not mention several others who as well always went above and beyond and deserve recognition: Giovanna Sylvester, RN, Thalia Johnson, RN Elaine Johnson, Support and last but certainly not least by any means Dr. Greg Kohler. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You are simply outstanding, and we will always be grateful that you stood beside us on this most difficult journey. You will forever be part of our family.
Lauren Zalesky Honors Dr. Naomi Whittaker at UPMC Divine Mercy Women's Health
“Dr. Whittaker did two fertility surgeries for me and we conceived after two years of infertility. Now we’re on our third pregnancy!”
So many OBGYNs push birth control and IVF but she actually treated my issues so we can be healthy and have the family of our dreams.
