Dan Miles Honors

ER Staff at UPMC Harrisburg

Dan Miles1

For Dan Miles, riding his bike was his life, until one evening he was hit by a car as he rode home from work. Dan’s shoulder was shattered from the impact with the car windshield. Dan was transported by ambulance to the UPMC Harrisburg Hospital Emergency Department where he was triaged immediately.

Once stable, Dan was moved to the new orthopedic floor at Harrisburg Hospital. Because of his active, athletic lifestyle, Dan’s orthopedic surgeon tried to save his shoulder. But it was broken into so many pieces that he implanted a prosthetic.

“This was my first time as a patient in a hospital. The thought of going through surgery was a scary! The level of attention and care was superior—I was in great hands. Having physical therapy on the floor was a bonus. I was so impressed with everyone— even the ER doctor who managed to get my Under Armour® jerseys off without cutting them or causing me any pain.”
